Colorant tests

As a soap maker there are some things that just can't be overcome. Testing soap colorants is one of them. Sure most companies that cater to soap makers will have a cold process test block for their colorant. Some even have calculators for combining colors to get another color. For this reason some soap makers choose to purchase all of their colorant from a single source.

Now I'll admit I do that as well. That said I also make a point of testing all of my own colorants. Why? Because my soap recipe is different. I use things like kaolin clay that can change the color of a soap.

I also test my colorants when I'm creating a custom color. Mostly because I don't make enough soap to just wing it. When I do this I typically do a half pound test batch. Supplimenting the other half of my one pound mold for rebatch soap. That way I still get a nice bar of soap for personal use and I'm not waisting anything. What do you do?
