So why make soap? Well my main concern was single use plastic. I also don't like the idea of paying that much money for water. Since the main ingredient in the liquid soap you buy in the store is water. The concentration of cleaner also varies by manufacturer so on average it makes up anywhere from 40% to 10%.
You might ask at this point well then why is handmade liquid soap so much thinner than the store bought stuff? The answer is they either use a thickener or an emollient to make it that consistency.
Why worry about single use plastic? Because energy is expended to create it. Than to form it. Then we expend money shopping it about, and finally it is a limited resource. Considering things like medical devices are made out of it. It seems extra ordinarily single minded to use it for the purpose of cleaning my body when it comes in a much healthier form. Add in the fact that only around 10 % of what gets put in the recycle bin actually gets recycled and it just isn't worth it. In fact according to https://www.npr.org/2022/10/24/1131131088/recycling-plastic-is-practically-impossible-and-the-problem-is-getting-worse
Recycle rates have actually gone down. The rate also needs to be around 30% for it to be sustainable. That is too say recycling at a rate below 30% means it costs more to recycle the item than it's resale value.
That's my why. What is yours?
